This seems to be the time of the morning when I start the daily post. I’m at the office, I’ve checked the mail, dealt with any problems and am taking a quick breather.
Earlier this morning I made it to the penultimate boot camp for the season and slugged through the exercises. I can’t say I was highly motivated to give it my all knowing I’m racing this weekend, but I did still put a lot into the effort.
In most ways I’m happy that boot camp will be ending. I have gotten a lot out of it for sure, but no where near as much as I might have hoped. The reality is that I just haven’t been putting that much focus and attention on the class, certainly not enough to see a lot of gains.
Perhaps when Ironman and the subsequent Portland Marathon are over I’ll be ready to go for it again and really put the effort in. We’ll see.
— later in the day
Knowing I’m racing this weekend I wanted a professional to take a look at my brakes and gear setup since I swapped out the race wheels. Caps was open late and I rushed down with the bike to get them to take a look. 2 minutes later the guy is asking if I bought the race wheels used, seems the bearing in the back is lose and there is some sway on the wheel. Ug. He’s looking at it overnight but that just sucks.
It didn’t end there though. On the way home from Caps to get the kids and go to the pool my car brakes went spongy on a hill. Pumping them brought them up, but they were soft otherwise. Sure enough I have to bring my car to Canadian Tire in the morning for a checkup before I drive to freaking Osoyoos through the mountains.
A mellow mile in the pool tonight while the kids were playing and I was finding it easy to hit my zen place and maintain speed without a lot of work. On the drive home though I realized with a start that in my head I have been getting myself ready for disappointment in Osoyoos. Not hitting my goals, possibly even bonking out entirely and not finishing the race. This is a devastating mental place to be for me and I have no real clue how I managed to get there.
That’s not true actually, it was the hot run on Wednesday night that did me in and dropped the anvil on my head.
Home again and eating a salad and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship from Florida was on. Watching the elites race in what is definitely higher temperature than we’ll encounter this weekend did a lot to help put me back on an even keel. I need to keep myself positive. Fuck it, I KNOW I can race this and hit my goals. I just have to have a plan and stick to it.
