Posted on Feb 04, 2010 under Events, Family, IronMan Canada 2010, Kids, Nutrition | No CommentI’m short some workouts this week, other than my scheduled runs I just haven’t gotten off my ass enough to do them. The schedule, of course, is critical. Things get a bit better when the tri clinic kicks up because of the schedule, but I need to do more on my own as well.
I’ll figure it out over the weekend and into next week. It really is just a balancing act while juggling. I can make it work.
There is another high wire to negotiate. Being a dad and being an Ironman wannabe. Too much time spent just being a dad and I’m not going to get any training done and I will not achieve Ironman. Too much time spent training and I’ll miss the better part of a year in the lives of family.
Ironman really is for me. It is something that I want for myself. That being said, I think it’s something that helps me be a better parent in a lot of ways. If, as a parent, you do not grow, what do your kids have to look up to? We want them to strive to be the very best that they can be. We want them to grow and achieve. We support them in their goals and dreams.
Too often I hear parents use their children as the excuses for not doing anything. In some cases it’s just pure laziness, an excuse pure and simple. But there can also be a lot of truth. Taking time for yourself means taking time away from your children. So, when you do it, you have to have a good reason.
I do, in my own mind. Of course it could all just be self justification, but perhaps not.
I want my kids to look at me and see that I don’t quit. That I strive. That I work and work hard to accomplish something I want. I want them to see fitness as a lifestyle. I want them to see Ironman, not as something impossible or unlikely, but as something feasible and within their reach. And, I want to be their hero in a world that doesn’t have a lot of them anymore.
Nutrition today took a downturn shortly after lunch when I decided to have a can of coke. Then small snacks in the afternoon. The ice cream was likely going to happen anyway, but the chocolate bar wasn’t needed and could have been replaced with an orange if I’d brought one.
Breakfast:
- Vector with yogurt
Lunch:
- Leftover pasta with sauce and cheese
- Can of Coke
Snack (0):
- Crunchie Bar
Snack (1):
- Small bowl of ice cream (it’s still in the freezer at work!)
Dinner:
- Chicken quesadilla with beans, peppers and chili peppers (damned nummy!), and, of course, cheese.
