What’s next?

I’m getting asked that question a lot lately. To be honest, I’m not really sure.

I have tentatively made a plan though.

Serious training is what I need to get to “the next level”. Of course, that means I have to know what the next level is going to be.

Boston. And to do that I need a 3:20:59 marathon. That would be a 42 minute PB.

Can I get there on my own? I don’t think so actually, I’m not disciplined enough. But can I get there? Oh yes. I can.

I was talking to the folks at Peak Center tonight and I’ve agreed to head in there a couple of weeks after Portland and figure out where I am and how much more I have to do.

Then, 11 months of training and a qualifier shot in early October 2011. If I fail, I have options in early December for another shot. That will have me running Boston in 2012.

What else though?

I’d like to do H2H solo, perhaps as early as 2011. Barring that, 2012. That is secondary to Boston though.

And more triathlons. Of course.

While I’m training for Boston everything else will be secondary, but I am planning on staying in Ironman shape. So, that means UBC and Osoyoos next year I think. If I qualify at Osoyoos then perhaps Ironman again. I dunno though.

First I have to get through Portland and see where I am.

Here’s the thing though, I’m not done.

Not by a long shot.

Up early and out for a 4 hour trail run with Linda. We didn’t go hard and fast, but I couldn’t have gone harder, not by much. At the end I was spent. Loved it.

Up for the first 20 minutes or so and then up/down/along towards Grouse Mountain. We somehow lost the Baden Powell trail (not as hard as you might think) and wound up doing some dipsy doodling around St Mary’s before finding our way back. We found the Grouse Grind and the army of people marching up, up, up! We went down the last little stretch to the base and a stop at Starbucks for some water and the loo.

Through the parking lot and back along to the Baden Powell we managed to stay on the trail this time and made decent time back to the start at the Lynn Valley Headwaters. From there we had a quick break for water and the loo (it was a theme for me) and we were off and running again. Ultimately we wound up at Twin Falls and watched a drunk fellow jump off the bridge and into the waters. Looked like fun really.

Back up and towards the car again, but the shorter route now. 10 minutes from the end, trying to go around a family up ahead by floating off the boardwalk, I spike a tree branch and take a header. My arm is swollen and bruised, but my ego took a bit more of an immediate knock. Endorphins helped the last 10 minutes though and we finished with no other incidents. Figures I’d get hurt on the non-technical area near the end.

A drop into the water for a cool down and the body was feeling better. I could not have asked for better company than Linda and her ultra dog Leica. Linda was totally cool with taking breaks when needed and seemed to be able to intuit when I was about to ask for one.

The rest of the afternoon and evening went by in a blurr, lunch out with Linda, hung out at the Running Room, had friends over for dinner, relaxed and chatted about old times.

Sleep time now, brick day tomorrow.

    Nutrition and Exercise

There isn’t really a way for me to quantify the food consumed, or the exercise done. I simply wasn’t keeping track along the way. This should be close though.

0630
- Bowl of porridge

0745
- 4 hour trail run. Garmin reads 22.6km, but the Garmin lies! I had it off for 12 minutes (give or take) at one point, and I am sure that it was losing signal at times (too many straight lines on the map for it to be accurate). But, I’ll take it as I see it. Tough trails that were at the upper level of technical skill for me currently. I have a new appreciation for trail runners.
- 5 gels while running (500 cal)

1300
- Ketchup chips
- Lifesaver gummis (THANK YOU LINDA!)

1400
- Jones Soda (160 cal)
- Iced tea/lemonade
- 2 pieces nigiri sushi
- Gommae
- 2 rolls
- 2 Yakitori

1630
- Jones Soda (160 cal)

1930
- Shepherd’s Taco
- Cowboy Pie

Quick post here as I’m sitting at a campground surrounded by bugs who are attracted to the monitor.

Up in Osoyoos, no training done today, lots of driving.

Quick food all around, but not horrific.

Looking forward to tomorrow and some sleep tonight.

Merry Christmas!

Just a quick Merry Christmas to everyone. May you find peace, comfort and joy today as you celebrate with your family, your friends or in the blissful silence of an empty house with a live World of Warcraft account :)

Eat until you are full today, for tomorrow we run it all off again!

OK, I really like the count down and had to stuff it into the title somehow.

Not a lot of exercise today, again. I need to come up with an exercise regime that I can do on off days. Something involving a lot of situps and squats or the like.

I worked from home today to deal with the roof leak again, and I think that the moron doing the work has finally patched it successfully. There is still a leak but it isn’t flooding as it was. Of course this could be blown away in the next storm, but for right now it’s better than it was.

I’m pretty relaxed now that I have a place for Dec 1, even if it means living next door to Sheryl :) Of course I have only 1 week to pack and organize the place and get it ready for the move so I shouldn’t be too relaxed.

I can’t justify doing a countdown on days where I do nothing! But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get closer to race day I guess. As of today it’s 40w 3d. Wow.

No exercise today, again the world took over a bit. Not being able to ride outdoors or lean on my spinner, or swim; well, that leaves me with running. And running alone is boring :)

I do need to start hitting the gym at work, but I wasn’t there for long today. Last night my roof was leaking, again. ug.

But, on a good note, I have a new place as of Dec 1. How awesome is that?

No entry today :(

Way too much typing for the day and it is catching up with me.
